My 2021 internship at Cogent provided me with true hands-on experience that positioned me to make the transition into my professional career. While many internships consist of busy work and unrelated tasks, at Cogent my managers trusted me enough to provide me with the agency and space to own and contribute to meaningful projects. By involving me in both internal and client meetings, providing regular feedback, going out of their way to acknowledge my contributions and supporting me every step of the way, the team fostered my professional growth. Because of Cogent’s personable and supportive work environment, I also gained valuable mentors and friends in the process!

I was a government relations intern at Cogent Strategies during my spring semester of my senior year, and I had an overall wonderful experience. The team at Cogent was very flexible and willing to work around my class and exam schedules, and allowed me to explore my professional interests and develop my writing, research, and communication skills. I had the opportunity to do meaningful work that directly impacted our clients while gaining exposure to different industries. Additionally, the people at Cogent were welcoming, supportive, and represented an impressive variety of backgrounds and areas of expertise. It was a pleasure not only to work with them, but to have meaningful conversations about career paths and areas of study, especially at a time in my life when many options lay before me.

I had the opportunity to do substantive and meaningful work on a wide range of issues, such as clean energy and environmental justice, gun violence prevention, banking, and telecommunications. The staff ensured that I could work on projects related to the issues that I care most about while also exposing me to new and interesting topics and projects. It was clear that the staff wanted the interns to feel like a part of the team, and they allowed us to attend briefings, write memos, and craft important work that was passed along to the clients. Every day I got to work with a new client or type of project, expanding both my knowledge and skills.
